Chapter Seven

My roommates didn’t get in until late. I didn’t know how late because I didn’t care enough to check my clock. I slept like the dead, dreaming about Will and the ring that matched his eyes. I dreamed that Nic and Christie were married with triplets. And in my dream, they still pretended like they didn’t like each other much. It was strange.

My alarm went off early, and I tore myself away from my comfy bed. The B-girls slept right through it. For the sake of everybody, I picked up the landline and asked for a wake-up call for an hour later. Then I went into the bathroom to get ready.

I couldn’t wait to get downstairs to see Will. I was grinning so wide my cheeks were hurting. Then the elevator doors opened and I saw Coach standing inside.

He gave me a smile that didn’t reach his beady eyes. “I thought I’d grab breakfast a little early.”

We were going to have to steal his chewing tobacco. I’d had enough of his scrutiny. He wore a black track suit today which made him look like a caricature of a sinister villain.

“Yay,” I said.

Neither of us spoke again until we reached the restaurant. Will had a table for us, and he’d already gotten juice for each of us. I couldn’t help smiling as I realized he had a third one already on the table.

“Hi, Coach,” he said. “Hi, beautiful.”

“None of that,” Coach said.

Seriously?

“I got you some juice, Coach.” Will gestured to the table. “I would have gotten your coffee but I wasn’t sure how you liked it.”

“Two sugars, no cream,” he said. “Three sugars, I mean.”

Coach was trying to hide it, but Will had him off balance.

“I’m glad you could join us this morning,” Will continued. “Amanda and I were going to talk about soccer. I’m sure you’d have some valuable input.”

Coach grimaced. “Soccer’s for communists,” he said.

I almost laughed in his face. It wasn’t unusual for a football coach to dislike soccer, but to call it communist?

Without saying another word, Coach went over to get a plate at the buffet.

I covered my mouth to keep from laughing out loud.

Will smiled at me.

“You did reconnaissance!” I said.

“I heard from the guys that he was going to be early this morning,” he admitted. “They shared five of their Surefire Ways to Get Rid of Coach.”

“It’s a list?”

He nodded. “They have over fifty suggestions. I went with the top five.”

“Yay!”

“When you get back with your food, we’ll debate whether Beckham or Mia Hamm are the greatest athletes of all time.”

I laughed out loud this time. “So loving this.”

“Then we have to discuss how American football, and use that term, he hates it… How American football doesn’t truly test athletic ability.”

“He’s going to kill us,” I said.

“I like our odds,” Will said.

“We may not have to hide his chewing tobacco after all,” I said.

“Bite your tongue,” Will said. “I’m really looking forward to that!”

“Looking forward to what, son?” Coach asked as he put his plate down.
